Coffee vs fat? What diet will help in the fight against fatty liver disease | Proper nutrition | Health

The epidemic of overweight and obesity is gaining momentum. Already 37% of Russian residents have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Among them there are children, and from early life.

Why does it occur and how to eat, so as not to get sick? Told Head Consultative and Diagnostic Center “Healthy and Sports Nutrition” Ph.D., MD, physician, nutritionist of the highest qualification category Federal State Budgetary Institution Nutrition and Biotechnology FITS Ekaterina Burlyaeva.

Fatty liver disease is a condition in which there is an excessive accumulation of fat in the liver. One of the reasons is alcohol abuse, in which case alcoholic fatty degeneration of the liver occurs. A more common option is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, the prevalence of which in Russia reaches 37%. According to domestic studies, it is found in both adults and children, from the earliest years of life. This disease is often associated with obesity, increased cholesterol, and insulin resistance. The danger of developing the disease is associated with damage to liver cells and their replacement with inactive tissue (fibrosis), which leads to impaired organ function.

A key role in the treatment and prevention of the disease is given to nutrition. A decrease in the total calorie intake due to a decrease in primarily fatty foods leads to a decrease in body weight and an improvement in medical indicators. What else should I look for, in addition to limiting foods that are high in fat?

Fruits. Sugar in fruits (fructose) is a simple carbohydrate that quickly raises blood sugar levels. Fructose stimulates the formation of fatty acids in the liver and fat storage. It is worth restricting fruits with a high glycemic index (grapes, bananas, melon), dried fruits, freshly squeezed juices.

Chicken eggs. One study showed that people who consumed 2-3 eggs a week had a higher risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (3.56 times higher) compared with those who consumed less than 2 eggs per week.

Coffee. A cup of freshly ground coffee brewed in the morning will not only invigorate, but also help in the fight against the disease. Studies show that drinking coffee has a protective effect, contributing to the regression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and lowering the risk of fibrosis.

Vitamin E.. According to studies, there is a positive effect of vitamin E on liver function. Under the influence of this vitamin, the severity of inflammatory phenomena, fatty liver and fibrosis decreases. However, the question of the need for vitamin E in the preparations has not been finally resolved. Its natural sources are vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, etc.

Omega 3. A number of studies have shown that polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially omega-3s, have anti-inflammatory effects and inhibit the development of fibrosis and the formation of fatty acids in the liver. Most omega-3s are in oily fish (herring, mackerel, salmon) and linseed oil.
