At Volvo in the future at 180 km / h no more fun

With the production of vehicles from model year 2021 now beginning, all new Volvo models are secured at a maximum speed of 180 km / h. The Swedish premium car manufacturer is thus encountering one of the most common causes of accidents – excessive speed – and is taking another important step on the way to even greater road safety. In addition, Volvo drivers can use the standard Care Key to independently reduce the top speed even more if, for example, they lend their vehicle to family members, friends and especially novice drivers.

As a pioneer in automotive safety, Volvo is once again making courageous and consistent progress. As with the introduction of the three-point seat belt in 1959, which has meanwhile saved several million lives worldwide, the Swedish premium automobile manufacturer is once again sending a strong signal: with the protection to 180 km / h and the standard Care Key, this takes it Company lives up to its responsibility and is actively working towards the goal of minimizing the number of deaths and injuries in road traffic.

“We believe that a car manufacturer has a responsibility to help improve road safety,” said Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Center in Gothenburg. “The speed limit and the dialogue that started it fit this approach. Thanks to the protection and the Care Key, people recognize how dangerous driving too fast is. Both measures provide additional safety and responsible driver behavior. “

The limited top speed in particular has caused a lot of controversy since its announcement. Some observers have even questioned automakers’ right to technically limit the pace. However, Volvo Cars feels obliged to use its tradition and pioneering role and to initiate discussions about measures that can ultimately save lives – even if the company may even lose potential customers in individual cases.

According to studies, many people underestimate the dangers of driving too fast and do not adapt their pace to the current traffic situation. However, even the most advanced safety systems and intelligent infrastructure at high speeds are no longer enough to prevent serious injuries and fatalities in an accident. For this reason, speed limits apply in most western countries. However, millions of people are striking each year at excessive speed, which remains one of the most common causes of road death.

Other typical causes of accidents besides excessive speed are driving under the influence of intoxicants and distraction. Volvo Cars is also tackling these two areas in order to get closer to its vision of road traffic without fatalities or serious injuries. The company takes this human behavior into account in its safety work and introduces appropriate measures and systems in future vehicles.
