After anti-racism protests: Migros takes Dubler “Mohrenkenken” off the shelf

Previous protests had no effect: Migros is now reacting to the current protests after George Floyd’s death.

The protests against racism after the death of the African American George Floyd are also having an effect in Switzerland:

The Dubler “Mohrenkenken” disappear from the Migros shelves. The product was previously available in two branches of the Zurich Migros Cooperative. Now a spokeswoman writes on request:

“The current developments mean that this product can be perceived as provocative. That is why we immediately removed this confectionery from our range. »

The discussion about the sweetness of the Dubler company flared up again through a Twitter video of a customer. On it you can see the sweets, also called foam heads or chocolate kisses, in a Zurich branch. The customer wrote:

The product name is “extremely racist connotation” and not politically correct.

He provided the short message with the catchphrase “Black Lives Matters”, under which is currently being demonstrated against the violent death of the African American George Floyd.

The tweet received many reactions. Some people are outraged by the term “Mohrenkopf” and criticize it as “racist”, others defend the name of the pastry. It has nothing to do with racism.

Earlier protests left Migros cold

Most recently, the discussion about the Dubler “Mohrenkopf” raged in 2017. At that time, a “Committee against Racial Sweets” launched an online petition on the Change.org platform. Around 1,500 people signed the demand that Dubler rename his candy.

At that time, Migros Zurich was cold with this protest. But it was only available in two branches. The Migros Zurich spokeswoman writes about the origin of the range:

«After the opening of Shopvillemärt in Zurich’s main train station (formerly Marinello) in 2015, the product was added to the range due to the high demand from former Marinello customers.»
