Coronavirus patients are no longer contagious 11 days after the onset of symptoms of the disease, according to findings from scientists at the National Center for Infectious Diseases in Singapore, as well as from the Virology Department of the Academy of Health Sciences from the country, reports the daily Straits Times.
According to their estimates, examinations of patients in a state of recovery may show the presence of the coronavirus, but it is no longer dangerous. Scientists assume that the tests only detect part of the genome of the virus, but are not able to determine its vitality and its ability to transmit to another person.
The center’s executive director said the researchers had received sufficient evidence to prove that the person would no longer be contagious 11 days after the onset of symptoms of the disease.
The exceptions
In addition, he pointed out that there are exceptions, such as people with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy or taking certain immune drugs after an organ transplant.
However, the Singaporean Ministry of Health has not yet validated this practice and, currently, a patient can only be discharged from hospital after two negative coronavirus tests.
