A resident kept complaining about the state of the roads, the town paid him 1.65 million euros

The city of Aarschot (Flemish Brabant) has decided to pay 1.65 million to an activist who had complained, in various legal proceedings, about the state of the roads in the town, provided that he stopped there. complaints. The end of the conflict is in sight insofar as the city is committed to putting its roads back in order by the summer, said Friday Marc Boes, a lawyer for the commune. Marc Van Damme first complained about the lack of road maintenance in his commune of Holsbeek, then, from 2014, continued his actions against the city of Aarschot.

Five judgments were thus pronounced between September 2014 and March 2019. Each time, the municipal administration of Aarschot was ordered to carry out work.

The continuation of procedures resulted in the fixing of a fine of 1.38 million euros to be paid by Aarschot in favor of Mr. Van Damme.

The municipal authority and the mayor Gwendolyn Rutten (Open Vld), in a gesture intended to put an end to his claims which increased to the sum of 4.7 million euros, proposed to pay 1.65 million to complainant. A proposal that was accepted Thursday evening.

A final procedure is still pending before the Brussels Court of Appeal. “The case loses its raison d’être by the conclusion of this agreement and will probably be closed,” postulates Me Boes.
