For just a week now, the Viennese have been able to eat for free with the city’s gastronomic vouchers. Exactly 68,559 vouchers have already been redeemed, the majority of them on weekends. The financial city councilor Peter Hanke (SPÖ) announced on Monday. In the meantime, 3,404 restaurants are participating in the campaign. That is more than a third of all Viennese inns and coffee houses.
Shortly after the start, the vouchers caused a sensation: innkeepers criticized the alleged bureaucracy, letterboxes were broken open and attempts were made to sell the vouchers on the online marketplace Willhaben.
